First experimental route Ukraine – Georgia – Azerbaijan – Kazakhstan – China left Illichivs’k sea port last week. This route will become a new direction of the Silk Way and an alternative for supplying cargos from Ukraine to the abovementioned markets bypassing Russia. The way is expected to become competitive compared to the traditional land route. Cargoes will be shipped to Georgia, after that delivered by rail to Azerbaijan, then shipped to Kazakhstan, and finally delivered by rail to China.
Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Volodymir Omelyan has given an estimated time of 10 to 12 days of the total train route. The route, however, has all the potential to take 9 days. Mr. Omelyan said that “without any exaggeration this route is historical. I honestly believe that, after working out all the technical details, the route will become regular and both politically and economically effective”.
